“Obon, Dance of Light”

Single from the album One Breath.

"Obon, Dance of Light" celebrates enduring life and love in the wake of profound loss. It shares the story of an Obon lantern ceremony held a year after my husband and soul mate Scott Jaeger's death. I hope it brings you comfort, hope, and inspiration to celebrate life and grieve your losses with your friends.

With special thanks to award-winning musician Peter Phippen for the Japanese shakuhachi flute solos, the harmony parts on dizi bamboo flutes, and the meditative bass part. Also, thank you to Melanie Finney for organizing the Obon, or Bon, ceremony that inspired this song, including reading "When Great Trees Fall" by Maya Angelou and playing the folk song "The Water Is Wide." (Both of these pieces have cameo appearances in the lyrics if you listen carefully.) Our conversations have supported and nurtured me along with my art. Melanie's words in particular inspired the lines, "We have loved deeply. We have grieved intensely. We have healed profoundly." Finally, thank you to j Miranda for the lovely photo--taken at the ceremony--that became the cover art for the single.

Latest Album: One Breath

Released on June 24, 2022

One Breath features songs I wrote in response to hard times and times of transition for me personally and in the wider world. These songs explore transcendence, the mysteries of living and dying, and how we find healing and hope in the wake of profound loss.

One Breath is, well, breathtaking!  It was one of the best albums I received in 2022. Kaia Fowler is a gifted songwriter and vocalist.
— Lilli Kuzma, Host of "Folk Festival" on WDCB Public Radio

One Breath as an album, reflects on our relationships with ourselves, each other, nature, and spirituality. As a whole, the album resonates with love and an invitation to comfort, courage, and connection.

Lines like, “When we feel that we are one—one blood, one breath, one Earth, one sky—then at last we shall overcome, and on the wings of Freedom fly, fly, fly,” from “Take Shelter in Love” reveal a longing for transformation and Unity. Similarly, the title track, “One Breath,” explores what a difference one breath makes in a lifetime, from the first breath to the last. With the line “We all breathe one breath,” the song proposes unity in our collective breathing of Earth’s air every moment of our lives. Written prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the song takes on an even more powerful presence in the context of this horrible illness and the tragic deaths it has caused worldwide. One Breath honors our losses and offers balm to ease the healing.

My music is available on most music streaming platforms and for download on Apple Music and Amazon Music. Search “Kaia Fowler” to find available tracks.

Although streaming my songs can help me get more recognition on Spotify and other platforms, it pays very little. Please consider purchasing the album or making a donation to benefit my arts and wellbeing ministry and help me keep making and releasing more recordings. Thank you!

Seams of My Heart (2010)

My first studio album from 2010 featuring all original songs. “Framed by Kaia Fowler’s passionate vocals and guitar work, this album also features outstanding accompaniment by violinist Randy Sabien, dobro player Paul Bast, keyboardist Sam Steffke, and percussionist Jeremy Reutebuch. The Americana Gazette reviewer called this CD ‘flawless. . .Each song is well written, with authenticity of life.’” This album features “Feelin’ Alright,” one of my most-requested songs.

All The Way EP (2015)

This benefit EP album released in 2015 contains four songs—the title song “All the Way,” “Stay With Me,” “Feel So Much” and “Where the Water Meets the Land.” The songs on this album were inspired by my late husband, Scott R. Jaeger, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013. For every album sold, I donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Go to this item in my store and buy a CD to support this beautiful cause, creating hope for better life-sustaining treatments for those who get this difficult-to-treat disease. Thank you!

Share the Cake (2016)

This is a live recording of a song that I co-wrote with a friend of mine, Hassimi Traore, who is from Burkina Faso, Africa. It features lyrics based on a poem by Hassimi Traore with additional lyrics and revisions done by me. Singers on the recording, in addition to myself on lead vocal, include Lawrence Bell, Scott Dakin, Allayah Manns, Torchia Rogers, Hassimi Traore, Mariah Velas, and Aaron Wilder. Guitar and lead vocals by Kaia Fowler. Dobro by Steve Tesmer. Live recording production engineer: Roger Yin.
